Formula One Canadian Grand Prix
5 - 7 June 2009 - Montreal, Canada

Canada F1™ Grand Prix
:: Montreal

Montreal a unique combination of European laisser-faire and North American savoir-faire. Here, the echoes of over 350 years history quite happily bounce off shiny new office towers.

This is a city with the heart of a village and that is part of Montreal's charm. Montrealers live, work and play in a compact vibrant downtown core. The atmosphere is relaxed, wide open and welcoming. Conversations are threaded with French, English and most often dozens of other languages. The city is clean, green, safe and devoted above all else to savoring every minute, all year round. Life is good in Montreal, the pursuit of pleasure and an all-encompassing creative spirit drives Montrealers to fiercely protect the old and nurture the new.

Although Montreal does enjoy four seasons, winter and summer are the most prominent. Spring is very short, and the first hints of autumn begin in mid-August. Winter starts in October and lasts until early May. The average January temperature is -18°C (-4°F).

Montreal began as a French religious community. It soon developed into a nucleus for traders and trappers, and later, it welcomed a variety of immigrants who all maintained their own cultures and contributed to the distinct cosmopolitan flair. It is the second largest French speaking city in the world. The city's architecture is excitingly creative: a mix of rich heritage and modern lines. The effect of the majestic St. Lawrence River, European's original gateway to North America, that inspires exploration Founded Ville-Marie in 1642, Montreal today is lovingly preserved, graceful stone structures merged with the 21st century. Montreal's cultural landscape dazzles, contemporary French music and literature, dance, drama, film, and fringe festivals of every type vibrate the city in summer..

Montreal has a very extensive and extremely practical subway-bus network. The western sectors of the city are reachable by suburban trains from the Bonaventure and Vendéme stations. Although quite heavy, automobile traffic flows reasonably well. Try not to drive in Old Montreal, where the streets are narrow and often congested. Tourist offices and bicycle-rental facilities can provide excellent maps of cycle paths and routes. If you are tempted to try an organised bus tour, various options are available, one of which allows you to visit the city and to get on and off where you like.
